Pumpkin Pie Baked Brie Bites & Gewürztraminer

An easy, festive little appy that's perfect for Thanksgiving, especially when served these with a refreshing wine with a hint of sweet, like a Gewürz, Riesling, or Prosecco.

What to pair?

These tasty little bites are light and airy with a lovely combination of sweet from the pie filling and salty from the Brie. Whenever you have sweet food, it’s ideal to pair it with a wine that has matching sweetness (otherwise the wine will just taste bad). Since these bites are both sweet and salty, you can get away with a wine that has a hint of sweetness rather than a fully, decadently sweet wine (which you would probably need for straight up pumpkin pie).

My number one choice for a pairing would be an off-dry Gewürztraminer. This is a white wine style (most commonly from Germany, Northern France, or Canada) that is super aromatic, with common flavours of tropical fruit (like lychee), flowers (like rose petal), and warm spices (like ginger and nutmeg). They tend to have higher alcohol, which gives them a lush, almost creamy mouthfeel, but are still refreshing enough to contrast the creamy, cheesy bites. A slightly sweet (or off-dry) Gewürz pairs perfectly with these little guys because of their similarities. Both have a touch of sweet, warm spice flavours, and a creamy mouthfeel. And in the world of pairings, like goes with like!

Alternatively, you could go with a contrasting pairing, like an off-dry Riesling or an extra-dry Prosecco. (NOTE: off-dry and extra-dry both mean ‘hint of sweet’, but the latter refers to sparkling wine! I know, it’s confusing). Both of these wine styles will offer that much needed touch of sweetness, but they have higher acidity and lower alcohol than a Gewürz, making them more refreshing and palate cleansing in contrast. They also have nice fresh flavours (like green apple, lime zest, and subtle floral notes), which nicely contrast the warm spice flavours of pumpkin pie filling!

The nice thing about all three of these wines is they are all great aperitif wines, so regardless of which one you choose, they will be the perfect accompaniement to this appy while everyone is waiting on dinner!
